Advantages and disadvantages with computer and internet/summary

In the story A Career in computer games, from the book Horowitz Horror, published in 1999, Antony Horowitz reports that the internet and computer games may have a negative impact on the kids and even young ages live who use the internet and computer without wisdom, where they neglect everything around them for example playing or going out with friends thus it makes them lose contact with others and even their family. This also affects their studies because they neglect all their lesson and homework to play computer games, for example, Kevin on the story A Career in computer games, while he was on the geography lesson he opened his computer and ignored the teacher. To play his favorite game and find the last gold star and moon request, he has spent the rest of the lesson playing computer games. Even the broke school rules by taking his computer to the class.

Antony Horwitz moves on to explain that we should prohibit kids and young ages from playing violent games because they can easily get affected by all the violence in those games at such an early age. They can sometimes get carried away by the game that they can’t control their behavior, for example when they lose in a game they become angry and may they could hurt others. Kids who play these games for lengthy periods might find the use of weapons a normal thing, they might even start playing with kitchen knives as if they were toys. These games are affecting young ages in a way that they start behaving aggressively without noticing that. This is not limited to computer games but also to the internet where there are many kids under fifteen use internets without the supervision of parents, this may expose them to many risks, for example, extortion or sexual harassment etc.

I don’t deny that the computer and internet have many advantages and are very useful for our lives but when the kids and young agers lose orientation and attention of parents, therefore the only victim will be them.

In my opinion computers and the internet represent what is possibly the biggest technological advance of our age. They have brought us many benefits, including wonderful opportunities for business, education, and social life. But in general, violent computer games should be prohibited to everyone because I believe that there’s absolutely nothing funny or enjoyable in killing people even if it was inside a virtual world. It is so important to use the internet wisely, thus parents should step up and do something before it’s too late. Maybe give their children two or three hours a day to use computer and internet, and dedicate more time to studying and other daily activities. By doing that we would be able to at least protect our children and our new generations.
